  4.  On the disk in your disk drive you will find "ST NEWS" Volume 9 Issue 3, 
  5. filled to the gerbils (?!) with all kinds of stuff as usual,  and  barely 
  6. in time not to be too late,  sortof.  Never mind all these  uninteresting 
  7. utterings,  just get down to the section below to see if some of the many 
  8. things in it might entice you into an actual reading session.
  9.  Suffice,  for  now,  to tell you that it was finished on  December  17th 
  10. 1994,  and that it's the 38th issue in total and the 11th since "ST NEWS" 
  11. went undead.
  12.  Below you will find some more details concerning this issue (like how to 
  13. copy it and what's in it).

  57. quite a chance it's not actually an adventure.

  81. so  far to be featured in "ST NEWS" in its whole entireness - and  likely 
  82. not the last yet 'cause we still have some lying around.

  84.  AN EVEN MORE COMPLETE FALCON SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY LIST!

  86.  Now  you can see for yourself what old and recent stuff doesn't work  on 
  87. the Falcon and,  vastly more important,  what *does*.  It is probably the 
  88. most complete list of its kind,  and trustworthy too;  much of this stuff 
  89. is from my own experience.

  91.  INTERESTING PROGRAMS TO BOOT!

  93.  As usual you get some extra bits of software.  This time,  for  example, 
  94. there's  the  fiendishly insulting "Grandson of Wowbagger the  Infinitely 
  95. Prolonged"  swearing  accessory  and a really nice  and  flexible  thingy 
  96. written  by  a Nutty Norwegian called "PAnTHer".  Check  this  stuff  out 
  97. without further ado!

  101. = NOTES ABOUT COPYING ===================================================

  104.  I will be brief.  Just like the 37 prior issues,  "ST NEWS" is about  as 
  105. Public Domain as you can get.  Spread it,  copy it,  sell it (as CHEAP as 
  106. possible please),  I don't mind.  It is important that as many people  as 
  107. possible get this issue,  so give it to a friend for his/her birthday! In 
  108. case you're the owner of a Public Domain library, you are much encouraged 
  109. to include it in that.  I need NO royalties.  This is NO licenseware. You 
  110. can keep whatever profit you make yourself.
  111.  The disk format is:
  112.  
  113.  Tracks            : 0-80 (that's one extra)
  114.  Sectors per track : 11 (that's hyper-formatted)
  115.  Number of sides   : 2 (would have done 3 if only it were possible)
  116.  
  117.  You  can copy it with just about any modern disk copier  (though  Martin 
  118. Backschat's  "FastCopy"  would  be a most  excellent  choice  (free  plug 
  119. there)). And anyway, it's not *how* you copy it that's important, as long 
  120. as you *do* copy it, possible in the *largest* numbers!
  121.  Be  wise and steer clear of expensive PD libraries.  And please  send  a 
  122. donation now and again if you've enjoyed our efforts. I have received one 
  123. donation (hi Marinos!) in the last three years or something.

  126. = NOTES ABOUT COMPATIBILITY =============================================

  129. Atari (MEGA) ST(E): "ST NEWS" runs on all systems,  including those  with 
  130.                     512 Kb memory (though 1 Mb minimum would be nice, and 
  131.                     better).  Graphic cards are not supported. Please use 
  132.                     medium or high resolution only.
  133. Atari TT          : "ST  NEWS"  has been tested on a TT  and  works  when 
  134.                     launched from either ST medium or ST high resolution.
  135. Atari Falcon 030  : "ST NEWS" runs smoothly from any 80-column VGA/RGB/TV 
  136.                     resolution  with  the exception of "VGA  with  double 
  137.                     line on and 2 colours" or "TV/RGB non-interlaced with 
  138.                     2  colours" (in which cases it will  bomb).  Any  40-
  139.                     column   resolution  (including  ST  low   resolution 
  140.                     compatibility  mode) will cause all GEM and VDI  draw 
  141.                     commands  to  be  limited to the  left  half  of  the 
  142.                     screen.  Also, the file selector needed to specify an 
  143.                     ASCII/WP  file  to  be written  is  usually  coloured 
  144.                     wrongly  and drawn partly off the screen due  to  GEM 
  145.                     not being properly re-initialised. Any suggestions on 
  146.                     how to fix these problems?
  147.                     Keeping  [ALTERNATE]  pressed  during  booting  on  a 
  148.                     Falcon  with  VGA monitor connected  will  cause  the 
  149.                     program to use ST high resolution mode instead of  ST 
  150.                     medium  (among  other things,  this  slows  down  the 
  151.                     scroller).
  152.                     "ST  NEWS"  hasn't yet been tested on a  Falcon  with 
  153.                     SM124/5  monochrome monitor.  If you can  test  this, 
  154.                     please let me know the result. Should work, though.
  155. GEMulator         : "ST  NEWS"  works with it,  as long as you  have  the 
  156.                     music turned off.
  157. MultiTOS / Geneva : "ST NEWS" will not work with any multi-tasking OS, as 
  158.                     it uses no GEM at all. Please disable it.
  159. Warp 9            : Exiting "ST NEWS" may freeze the system with "Warp 9" 
  160.                     active.   This  can  be  fixed  by  adding  the  line 
  161.                     "ST_NEWS.PRG s0 b0 j0"   (turn  screen   accelerator, 
  162.                     mouse  block  and mouse jump off) in  the  "WARP.DAT" 
  163.                     automatic configuration file.
  164. BlowUp 030        : Exiting "ST NEWS" will cause a return to a  distorted 
  165.                     screen.  This is likely to happen with most  extended 
  166.                     screen resolution drivers, including "ScreenBlaster". 
  167.                     Please disable them. Does anyone know a solution?
  168. Disk drives       : There  are  a few (very few) disk drives  that  can't 
  169.                     handle 11 sectors per track.  I am very sorry,  but I 
  170.                     would  use a smaller format if I could.  There's  too 
  171.                     much  stuff I want to put in "ST NEWS" but not  quite 
  172.                     enough  simply  to  increase  the  frequency  of  its 
  173.                     appearance,  and  I *never* want to start  using  TWO 
  174.                     disks. Maybe, one day when everybody has HD drives, I 
  175.                     will switch to HD disks.
